England lose to Spain in Women's World Cup final
England have lost 1-0 to Spain in the Women's World Cup final in Sydney.
The only goal of the game was scored by Olga Carmona in the 29th minute.
England had the better of the chances in the first half, but they were unable to find a way past the Spanish goalkeeper, Sandra Paños. Spain grew into the game in the second half and deservedly took the lead through Carmona's strike.
England pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but they were unable to break down the Spanish defence. The defeat means that England have now lost in three major finals in a row, following their defeats in the 2019 Women's World Cup and the 2021 European Championship.
Spain, meanwhile, have won their first Women's World Cup title. It is their first major trophy since they won the European Championship in 1997.
