DMEA and Tri-State Working to Restore Large Power Outage

Power Outages Affect Thousands in Multiple States

A large power outage is affecting thousands of customers in multiple states, including Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. The outage began around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, and is affecting customers of the Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) and Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association.

DMEA is reporting that the outage is affecting approximately 25,000 customers in Montrose, Delta, Ouray, and San Miguel counties. Tri-State is reporting that the outage is affecting approximately 10,000 customers in Baca, Conejos, Costilla, Huerfano, Las Animas, and Otero counties in Colorado, as well as in parts of New Mexico and Texas.

The cause of the outage is still under investigation. DMEA and Tri-State are working to restore power as quickly as possible. In the meantime, customers are being asked to conserve energy and to be prepared for extended outages.

Safety Precautions During a Power Outage

During a power outage, it is important to take the following safety precautions:

  • Turn off or unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage when power is restored.
  • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible to prevent food spoilage.
  • Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns for lighting instead of candles, which pose a fire hazard.
  • Never use a generator indoors, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Check on elderly or disabled neighbors to make sure they are safe and have access to food and water.
